Teamsters at Hunts Point

Set among metal scrap yards and abandoned warehouses, the 125-acre Hunts Point Terminal Market is the world's largest produce market in terms of volume and houses 60 different produce vendors. Whether it is figs, horn melon, peppers or persimmons, if it’s produce, it comes through Hunts Point. The workers operating the forklifts, boarding the trucks, organizing the crates, and packaging the goods are members of Teamsters Local 202. The work at Hunt's Point is demanding. But thanks to the Teamsters, it does not go unrewarded. As 15-year veteran Vinny Alabnese put it: "You work hard here. You know you put in your time. But you know you’re going to get something back. You know you can retire with dignity." Photography by Sam Hollenshead.
