Rally for Immigrant Worker Rights

In the fall of 1999 and the summer of 2000, thousands of people converged on Washington D.C. to rally in support of an amnesty for undocumented immigrants living in the United States. Organized by the National Coalition for the Dignity and Amnesty of Undocumented Workers, a group which backs immigration reform and fair treatment of immigrant workers, the July 19, 2000, rally in Washington, D.C., was part of a growing movement calling for more rights for undocumented workers in the U.S. In contrast to the past—when many unions supported tough laws against hiring undocumented workers—the AFL-CIO and its affiliate unions have become a powerful voice in defense of immigrant worker rights.
