From January 28 to February 2, 2002, corporate chieftains
and government officials from around the world gathered in New York
City for a meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The masters
of the global economy discussed strategies for expanding the reach
of multinational corporations. But like other meetings of the global
business leader in recent years, labor unions, environmentalists,
students and other activists who are opposed to the corporate global
agenda held protests in New York to demand a humane approach to
international trade and development. Although protesters represented
a diverse range of issues, common concerns included an end to sweatshop
labor, defense of the environment, and debt relief for struggling
Third World nations. Photography by Sam Hollenshead
